The Day I Decided to Share More Than Just Game Updates

I've been permitted to use some fantastic photos by Karhukuvat, a Finnish photography hobbyist, here on the blog. If you like what you see, you might want to check out more on Instagram.

Hello

I'm Mielitty, a game developer from Finland. My journey into game development started around 2015, after moving from blue-collar work to IT. While my day job is in IT, it's not directly linked to game development. To me, games are a form of art and expression, which is why I've kept game dev as a side passion rather than a full-time job.

Over the last ten years, I've worked on many small projects that haven't been released and one larger project I won't name here. It did alright for an amateur effort, but I see it as a learning experience rather than something to boast about. I used to work with a small indie team, but now I'm doing everything myself.

Why I Started This Blog

I wanted a place to share the ups and downs of developing games solo, get feedback, and maybe inspire others. Writing also helps clear my mind. I can't guarantee frequent updates because most of my time goes into game development, which is quite demanding. Not all my posts will be publish-worthy, but it's nice to have this space on the internet to share my thoughts.

What to Expect from This Blog

I aim to post 1-2 times a month. If there's a long gap between posts, it's because I'm busy with MARRAS. Most posts will be about MARRAS or reflections on indie game development. I'm open to your suggestions on what to write about, so feel free to share your ideas.

My Current Project: MARRAS

MARRAS is a bullet hell shoot 'em up that blends traditional arcade design with modern aesthetics. It offers an Arcade mode for classic gameplay and introduces a Campaign mode with level structures reminiscent of precision platformers like Super Meat Boy or Celeste.

I'm making MARRAS on a very tight budget because it's possible nowadays and I want to show that you don't always need big funds to make good games - just dedication.

The tools I use are mainly free or open-source, fitting my need for simplicity and efficiency. I use the following tools more or less daily: Godot, Blender, Paint.NET. I also use tools like Audacity when needed.

Next blog post shall be about what was done with the MARRAS project in 2024 and giving you the short and long-term plans for the future. From that post on, I shall give you a status report in every new blog post published here.
